Olay Total Effects Line and Dark Circle Brush. . . AND a $100 Spa Finder Gift Card!

I always approach my cosmetic reviews with some degree of trepidation. As a certified cosmetic snob, with very strong opinions and very well set favorites, I always worry I will have nothing positive to say about the product I am asked to review. Even though I've had nothing but positive experiences thus far, each box brings a bit of nervousness. I needed not worry about the Olay Total Effects Line and Dark Circle Minimizing Brush because I really love this product!

Before I get started on what I think, let's hear a word from Olay. What do they claim this product will do?

First and foremost, Olay says this brush will help reduce the appearance of dark circles and fine lines around the eyes. Second, the brush will reduce puffiness around the eyes and increase firmness in the area. These were my primary areas of concern, in addition Olay focuses on hydration, texture, tone and moisturization- the 7 primary ways we show age around the eyes.

When I checked out the product page at the Olay site, the claim I was most dubious of was the reduced puffiness. How would a concealer do that?

Well, I'm still not sure. But this concealer does JUST THAT. When I wake up in the mornings, my body may be up and at 'em, but my eyes certainly are not. I tend to look like a groggy mess for at least an hour or two every morning while my eyes adjust to being open, even after applying makeup. On the first Saturday after I received this product, I was headed to the gym early in the morning after a late night out. I try not to be one of those makeup wearing gym goers, but the bottom line is, even at the gym I like to look decent. People I know work out there! So, I got out the brush and went to work.

I've used brush applicators in the past, and am admittedly NOT a fan. I don't use brushes to apply foundation either. The most positive attribute about the brush-click system in this product is that it allows you to better control the amount of product you are using. At the end of the day, I will still always prefer to apply my cosmetics with my finger, but this isn't a terrible system either. I loaded up the brush and applied Olay Total Effects underneath my eyes. There was an immediate lightening in the area, but nothing I'd say was akin to reducing puffiness.

BUT THEN! After a few minutes, I could suddenly feel the area around my eyes quite literally tightening. It was amazing, and my eyes really did look more alert. Color me impressed. This product does what it says. Whatever it is, it works.

As someone who doesn't really suffer from under eye circles, I was worried I would have some trouble determining its concealing effects. However, I've recently started using another product that tends to leave me with red, for lack of a better term True Blood Vampire Eyes, and they could certainly use some help. I was very impressed with the Olay products ability to counteract this effect.

How does this product compare to my usual under eye concealer? Well, my primary use of under eye concealer thus far has always been to just brighten the area around my eyes, not necessarily for the purpose of hiding dark circles, but because you always look peppier with a little lightness there. I’m very happy with my current concealer, which is multi-use and thus used on other spots in need of some concealin’. Before trying out this product, I had no idea that I could get the kind of awakening effects that the Olay product has achieved. I will definitely be using this under my eyes in the future.

I personally am lucky enough to not be experiencing the effects of fine lines around the eyes just yet, but I will say this- the texture of this Olay product is very light. Not nearly as thick as what I am used to for concealers. I can see that this would likely be advantageous if you do have fine lines- the heavier the concealer, the more likely it will be to sit and thicken up in your fine lines. This would be a great texture over areas starting to show signs of aging.

When I was first contacted by Blogher and Stouffer's to review some food items for their Make Every Night Amazing program, I was all OH YES, I AM THE PERFECT CANDIDATE. As readers of my personal blog will know, having time together during the week for my husband and myself is HARD. We are both attorneys, and he works very late nights several times each week. Finding time, or the energy, to cook a meal together during the week is just not something that happens. Which is why its exciting to come across a product like Stouffer's Sautes for Two.

Well, let's backtrack a little.

I've found meals like this several times in the past...and they were disappointing. I tend to shy away from buying such products because I haven't had the best experiences with meals that were not inexpensive.

With great trepidation, okay not really, since these were sent to me for free....with great uncertainty, Mr. A and I cooked both of the offerings that arrived on my doorstep- Chicken Asiago and Steak Gorgonzola.

When it comes to these types of meals, I have several reservations:

1) Meat- it's often rubbery, fatty, or uh, doesn't look like meat. At all.

2) Bland Sauce

3) Veggies are...questionable at best. And are often unidentifiable.

4) Not Enough Sauce

As I opened the package, the contents look familiar. Which I didn't really take as a good sign, but I suppose having high expectations for frozen meat is setting standards a little high. The directions were easy enough- thaw the sauce under warm water and put everything else in the pan! The meal honestly took about 4 minutes to cook. And I use the term cook loosely. I did a few quick stirs and the meal was done.

And how did it turn out? Darn good, I must say. To address the concerns listed above:

1) Meat- it tasted like…MEAT! The chicken actually looked like chicken, the beef was less appetizing in appearance, but Mr. A and myself both agreed that it was shockingly tasty even if it did look a bit…jerky-like. It was not dried out, which was not what I was expecting.

2) Bland Sauce- not here! Both sauces were really, really tasty. I, however, felt that the steak could have used some salt, especially on the meat. But I’m a big salt lover, so take my recommendation with….a grain of salt. OH I CRACK MYSELF UP.

3) Veggies- This was the best surprise of all. The vegetables looked like what they purported to be. I’m always VERY hesitant about frozen vegetables, especially those that come in a sauce based meal, but these had good texture and color. I think this has a lot to do with the fact that the sauce comes in a separate packet- the vegetables do not have time to sit and get mushy because they are frozen without sauce. This, to me, is a key component in making these meals tasty.

4) Not Enough Sauce- On the contrary, there was actually too much sauce. When making these next time, I will not add all of the sauce. Better too much than not enough!

Additionally, the pasta cooked up shockingly well, al dente even. And both pastas had a great texture. The filling on the pasta for Chicken Asisgo was plentiful- the tortellini noodles were quite large and the filling had a lot of taste. Overall, both meals were really quite good, and we both agreed we would buy them again in the future.

Not only because of the delicious flavors, but because the meal allowed us to have a Real Adult Dinner in a very short period of time on a night of the week when we are both generally too worn out to make the effort. Because of our schedules, we don’t get to enjoy week night couple time like a lot of people. Knowing that there is a simple, gourmet meal that can be prepared so quickly will hopefully motivate us to do things like this more often.

Additionally, for families with children, I can see these sautees as a great meal to make after you have fed the kids. Because they can be ready so quickly, it won’t be like having to cook two dinners. Mr. A made some garlic toast to serve on the side, and these meals would both be great with a simple green salad. There is also a lot of semi-homemade potential for these meals- adding some freshly grated cheese, stirring in some green peas, adding some extra leftover chicken. Every year around this time we start to see the debate- to make a resolution or not to make a resolution. I have not been immune to this great internal debate myself. Some years, January 1 comes with great anticipation of the things I will accomplish! Great declarations! Lists published on the blog! And then other years, resolutions are declared passe. So arbitrary. So pointless. Such a setup for personal failure!

The most common argument against resolutions seems to be some sentiment centering around the idea that a declaration made on January 1 is no different than those other declarations made throughout the year, and therefore silly and a waste of time. And while I can see the logic in that line of thinking, I've come around to think of resolutions just like I think about Valentine's Day. Sure, my husband and I love each other and (most days) appreciate one another, but do we take time every day to show that love and appreciation? No! So we eat a fancy meal, and buy a card, and find a token of affection come February 14. So goes my line of reasoning on New Year's resolutions- sure, I could make life altering declarations any old day of the year, but do I? No. So there's no time quite like the present!

To that end, this year I am not so much about making individual goals as resolutions (lose 5 lbs! Finally relearn Spanish!) as I am about making broader declarations about where I'd like to be next year (be more active! Acquire a new skill!). In my mind, these types of goals are less a recipe for failure, and more a useful aspiration!

And this year, I'd like to be more active in a variety of ways that don't necessarily have to do with logging in time on the treadmill. Sure, I definitely want to increase my time working out this year, but I would more generally like to live a more active a fulfilling lifestyle. This means cutting out the 30-minutes-that-turns-into-two-hours naps on a random Wednesday evening, making a weekly trip to the grocery store instead of darting into the store three times a week to cobble together some meals, clean out my car on a more regular basis so that I feel more organized, and using my weekend time with my husband doing activities outdoors instead of watching television together!

My goal this year is to continually remind myself that I have one life I'm living and I better make the best of it, and live it the best way I can. If I'm going to take an easy road, it should be the easy road to a healthy lifestyle and NOT the easy road to Sloth City, Population Me.

Getting Older, Getting Better? YES!

While there are plenty of things I am trying to stave off about getting older, there are certain things I'm trying to embrace. I am starting to get to the stage where I find things are in fact inappropriate for me to wear (although perhaps I should stop shopping at Forever 21 and I wouldn't have this problem). Mercifully, there are still plenty of things I'm still too young to wear as well. Along with my slightly more mature wardrobe, there's also a sense of comfort- in my skin, and in my clothes. While my husband may not always appreciate it, I'm pretty happy to let go of skin tight jeans and pointy toed pumps. These days I'm all about the trouser jean and a round toe pump.

There are also old habits that I am happily letting go of- sleeping in until 2 pm isn't as tempting when you start to realize how much you can accomplish in a day when you wake up at 9 am on a Saturday. I can go to the gym AND the grocery store? All before lunch?This, for me, was a real life changing revelation.

As I've gotten a little bit older, I have realized that certain life changes? Are actually making me look and feel better than I did when I was in my early twenties. Going to the gym every night? I feel strong. Eating vegetables? I feel less puffy and bloated during the day. Taking my clothes to the dry cleaners before I run out of pants? Amazing! (And honestly, for me, this might be the most difficult change for me to make!). In the last years of my twenties, and now at 30, I feel so much better than I have in years past. And that feeling better has translated into making even more changes to feel good about myself, and my skin care routine is truly a part of that. When 30 started to approach a few years ago, I made a choice to dedicate some time to taking care of my skin, not only to prevent aging and skin cancer. Because Your Concerns DO Actually Grow Beyond Skin Care with Age...

As I've discussed here before, I'm in something of a transitional phase in a variety of ways during my life. I've turned 30, I've recently moved in what I consider to me my first real grown up place, some big decisions about where I'm going with my career and personal life will have to be made in the next few years. And I'm just trying to be ready for it.

And how exactly am I going about this? Well, some weeks are more productive than others. I've tried to become more of a to-do list maker. Well, scratch that. I've always been a to-do list maker. I'm trying to become more of a to-do list....do-er? Achiever? Accomplisher? Whatever the term is, I'm trying to go about setting reasonable goals for the week and accomplish them. For me, my major areas of focus have been continuing to make my new place feel like a real adult home, trying to cook more meals and eat a more balanced vegetable and protein rich diet, and take care of normal weekly tasks like going to the grocery store, expense tracking, keeping the house clean, and helping my very busy husband enjoy what little time he has off. Despite having no children in the mix, it's a lot to take on. For my husband and I right now, all of these interests are being counter-balanced with trying to save for future expenses- trips, a home, continuing to decide if we want to have children and how to plan for that, and saving for retirement.

Lately, I have really been trying to focus on how to grocery shop and decorate our home with cost-consciousness in mind. We have been fortunate to have successful careers in our twenties, but we haven't been as successful at monitoring our spending. For me this means trying to shop at regular grocery stores, instead of Whole Foods like I have been. I have been trying to come up with affordable DIY projects to decorate our home, with a few trips to Ikea mixed in. It also has meant investing in high quality furniture that we will like for years, and not have to replace any time soon. Our biggest area of concern right now is spending large amounts of money on the right things, and watching our spending in areas where lesser expensive goods will work just as well.

For me personally, I have been trying to balance my spending on clothing and skin care and find what is worth the extra cost and what is not. This means trendy pieces from bargain stores, and more long term items like suits from higher end stores. It also means trying out new affordable skin care and make up products and deciding which ones are worth the expense. This is why I have so appreciated the opportunity to try out products like Olay Total Effects. I have, over time, become reticent to try out lower end products because the results have not always been good. My experience with this line has proven to me that there is no need to give up on drugstore brands. Just as in the case with Olay Total Effects, they can be just as effective, if not more so, than department store goods.

Days of Reckoning, with Olay Total Effects.

Getting "older" is kind of a weird thing, huh? Having just turned 30 this summer, I am really busy trying to look younger and older all at once. Based on my recent experience, it seems like this is the age where people contradictorily warn you about getting your you know what together, and making sure you don't start looking your age. It's a rather bipolar time.

When I am not spewing out my thoughts on the internet, I spend my time working as an attorney. Having recently hit five years of practicing law, there is a lot of pressure for me to figure out where my career is going and what my future aspirations are in the realm of my career. I can no longer merrily jump from job to job (in five years of practicing, I have had four jobs). Youthful indulgences of "trying to figure myself out" are no longer so easily forgiven.

It is kind of the same thing with your skin. Up until a few years ago, all kind of little indulgences were accepted by my face. Stayed up too late partying and did not wash your face? That's okay- No zits for you! Didn't have time to exfoliate? That's okay with your pores! They will take care of everything- no blackheads for you! Spent a little too much time in the sun? Not a problem- no hyperpigmentations for you!

For me, my day of reckoning with regards to these particular issues came a little early- when I was about 25, my skin started to go a little crazy in the breakout department and decided to make up for lost time missed when I did not suffer teenage acne. And now that I've hit 30, I still suffer from some of the same issues, but I have had to add a different concern to the mix- it is time to start worrying about preventing wrinkles.

As usual, I was very excited when BlogHer contacted me to be a part of the program to review Olay's newest product, the Total Effects Moisturizer with Cooling Hydration. But I also approached trying something new on my skin with some trepidation. As a creature of (expensive product) habit, I'm always a little hesitant to introduce a new product to my highly reactive skin. In other words, when my face does not take to a new product, it REALLY doesn't take to that product. It lets me know with all kinds of fun things like excessive greasiness, forehead and chin break outs and to top things off, a nice daily oil slick on my face. However, having just turned 30, I figured it was probably time to try out a daily moisturizer than wasn't just about SPF, but also had some anti-aging properties. I take good care of my skin, but as I get older, I am recognizing that it is indeed time to start thinking about wrinkle prevention and all the fun stuff that comes along with getting a (little bit) older.

So, the first thing I did was check out the product page on Olay.com. Just what were the alleged anti-aging properties? According to the product page, Total Effects fights aging in 7 different ways:

- minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

- smoothing skin with cooling hydration

- fighting dullness

- gentle exfoliation

- minimizing the appearance of pores

- protection from free radicals

- hydrating to increase the appearance of firmness.

Since I'm lucky enough to not yet be in the "fine lines and wrinkles" phase of my skin's life, I decided to focus my review on the matters that are most important to me- smoothing skin and minimizing the appearance of pores, fighting dullness and hydration with firmness. And well, one particular criteria of importance to me that was not listed- product scent.

So let's start there- scent. I'm happy to report that I really enjoyed the fresh scent of Olay Total Effects. There is a definite scent, not overpowering or overly floral, it is just nice and fresh and clean, which is exactly what I'm looking for at the start of the day. I also really enjoyed the cooling effect. My morning get ready routine is spent in the bathroom, which is full of steam from my morning shower. I am always fighting getting my face all sweaty while I put on my makeup before work. The cooling effect was nice- nothing drastic (in the manner of say, muscle cream), just enough to cool off my face from getting out of the shower. And it lasts long enough for me to get ready grease free. Point- Olay!

I have oily skin, so it is always a balancing act for me- going overboard with oil reducing products is always a risk, and I have plenty of times ended up with a pasty, dried out look to my face by going overboard with oil free products. However, as I get older, I have begun to recognize that while that dewy fresh glow isn't really in the cards for me, I can still create a nice hydrated look with the right products. The Olay product did a great job of balancing between dried out and greasy- this product provided a nice happy medium. Hydrated skin that didn't go into oil slick territory. I am also a big fan of makeup primers to smooth out pores and this moisturizer did not get in the way of that! Olay Total Effects provided a great base for my primer and foundation, and my makeup went on just as smoothly with this product as it did with the more expensive products already in my collection. This product is oil free and non-comodogenic and after two weeks of using it, I have not noticed any increase in clogged pores, which is very important to someone with oily skin. And just as advertised, the product was nearly immediately absorbed into my skin.

The one down side? NO SPF! This is certainly one thing, and really the ONLY thing I would change about this product. But overall, Olay Total Effects is a welcome addition, and an affordable one to add to my skin care repertoire.

So like, a year ago, I went on a little trip to New York City. And lucky me, the Gap contacted me about going on a little pre-trip shopping spree. Obviously, I merrily took them up. Not the same, but so co-dependent.

If you are anything like me, your physical health has so much to do with your mental health. And vice versa. One going well? The other one probably is too. Unfortunately, the converse is also true.

For me, my physical health is more determinative of my emotional health than the other way around. Over the past couple of years, I have been dealing with a physical health issue (the issue that drove me to start drinking so much water and Crystal Light in the first place) that almost entirely determines my mood when my problems start to act up. When I am physically uncomfortable because of my health issues, I have a very hard time being happy or excited about a lot of things. When my issues were undiagnosed for so long, I was frequently depressed. Depressed because I felt like I would never figure out what was wrong with me, and depressed because I was in physical pain. Because of my experiences, I am so amazed by people who, for example, have cancer and are dealing with chemo or radiation and are able to keep their good spirits about them. I find so much inspiration from people who can focus on the good and not let one issue dominate their lives and their health!

Focusing on the good is something I simply find so much easier when I am feeling well- well rested, well fed, well hydrated. When I am feeling good, I feel like I can make anything happen. I have a great life, and when I feel healthy and hydrated, I can truly enjoy it!

I know for many people, their mood will determine how they eat and if they stay hydrated, if they exercise, if they are well rested, if they are willing to make the effort to do what they need to feel physically well. What about you? Does your physical health effect your emotional health? Or are you just the opposite- your emotional health determines your physical health? I can see both sides really, and I find it so interesting how people come out on this issue. I am really looking forward to your comments on this one!

Eucerin Skin First!

While I was in New York, I had an opportunity to stop by the Eucerin booth at the Expo and picked up a wonderful gift bag full of GENEROUS FULL SIZE Eucerin products. I've long been a fan of Eucerin, given my skin's propensity to go completely, inexplicable insanely itchy in reaction to all manner of environmental triggers. In addition to using prescription allergy medication, I have been on the hunt for some kind of itch relieving skin lotion to apply in the mornings. A few weeks before I went to New York, I purchased a bottle of their Calming Itch Relief Treatment to use as a daily moisturizer for my body. I was pleased to finally find an itch relieving product that did not burn or make my skin uncomfortably tingly like other brands I've tried in the past. Hence why I was so giddy to pick up a trio of full size products at their booth.

I tried the body lotion and hand creme immediately- and not shockingly, they were both great. The body lotion is the perfect amount of richness for everyday use- plenty moisturizing without being so thick that you cannot get dressed right after application. And the hand creme was easily absorbed, which is really important as I apply hand lotion several times a day. I wash my hands frequently at work to avoid getting sick and I need something that isn't too thick.

The face lotion, however, I tried with a little trepidation. My skin care routine is something I have down to an art. And I tend to favor expensive department store lotions and potions for my face. Given my propensity to break out and react poorly to new products, I was worried that I was setting myself up for disappointment.

Thankfully, I was wrong- I love this product! It moisturizes my oily skin perfectly, without causing it to be greasy. It absorbs easily, and best of all, despite the fact that it is SPF 30, it doesn't smell like SPF and it doesn't sting my eyes like other drugstore brands I've recently tried. I am sold!

Body Image. Fun Stuff.

Body Image. If you are well, a human living on this planet, and especially a woman living on this planet, its something that you struggle with. If not daily, then weekly. If not weekly, well, then you are a lucky woman. I personally consider myself to be a pretty confident person, intellectually speaking AND in the realm of body image. But still, I have fat days, days I don't like my nose, days I wish I hadn't inherited my mom's bubble butt (okay, that's EVERYday). And I know from talking to others that I am pretty lucky in that my struggles with finding things I don't like about myself aren't something that constantly effect me. All this to say, even the most self assured woman is going to have a bad body image day.

How do I combat the doubts and the occasional urge to pick myself apart? Well, for starters I try to be proactive every day in doing something that makes me feel healthy. I go to the gym, I eat right, and most importantly I try to avoid things that I have learned are triggers for my body issues. In the past few years, I've made an effort to find out what works for my body and my mind. Some days, its as simple as drinking enough water to keep my body hydrated (and obviously I can drink more when its flavored with my favorite Crystal Light Fruit Punch). One of the things I love most about drinking water and Crystal Light is that it makes keeping on top of my water drinking goals, manageable and delicious.

Other days, its knowing not to try on the jeggings that everyone swears will make me love my bubble booty. I've accepted that that isn't going to happen. And sometimes, accepting what you can't change, physically or mentally, is the more important than being proactive about the things you CAN change.

I also find that succeeding in other areas helps me to be less concerned about whatever body issues I might have. I am good at my job. I wrote a blog post that started an excellent discussion. I volunteered to help someone. I did SOMETHING that was a helpful contribution and that had nothing to do with how I look in my new dress. Helping your body image does not always have to be about changing, or accepting your body.

Style, Water Drinking Style.

This week we’re talking about water drinking style. When I first read that, I thought “that sounds kind of silly.” But then I got to thinking about how my “water drinking style” has changed over the years, and how it has effected my attitude towards hydration and additionally how it has effected my overall health and feelings of wellbeing. And then it stopped seeming so silly.

So how have my water drinking habits changed? Well, for YEARS, years during which I was very involved in athletics and cheerleading, my water drinking style was NOT to have one. If I was thirsty during high school, I drank a soda. Water was for desperate moments when I did not have access to a vending machine. I literally never drank water, a habit that was surely handed down to me by my non-water drinking mother. The only times I had water during my childhood was when it was mixed with some kind of sugary drink. Not the healthiest way of being to be sure. Because of this, water was simply not something that even entered my mind to drink when I was thirsty. Thinking about that now, it is a little shocking.

When I went to college, my bad water drinking habits continued. Having access to a meal plan, and thus fountain drinks, I avoided water except when working out. And when I was done? Again, I rewarded myself with a nice icy soda from the snack bar right outside of the fitness center.

But when I got to law school, I decided that grown ups drink water. I know this sounds ridiculous, but that was really my line of thinking. I would try and drink at least two bottles of water a day, which in retrospect was still hardly enough, but it was a nice start.

When I got a little older I recognized that water was more important to me than just something to do for the sake of feeling like a grown up. It was important to my health. I started to drink a glass of water in the morning with my breakfast, water that was usually flavored with lemonade flavored Crystal Light because citrus seemed a bit more “breakfast-y.” Yep, breakfast-y. I would make an effort to go to the water cooler to have a few glasses during the day. I would take a bottle with me to the gym, a refill it at least once during my workout. I would have a glass with dinner, and a glass before bed. I became a hydration machine! The positive effects of my new water drinking style were felt throughout my life. Without getting too personal, my digestion was better. My skin looks more hydrated and healthy. I just plain have more energy. Drinking water makes me feel better and want to do better for my body. And because I occasionally fall off the water drinking wagon, I know that I have water to thank for all these good feelings. I can most definitely tell when I have not had enough to drink- I feel it everywhere.

Vacation, Diet Disaster?

Vacation, all I ever wanted. Had to get away. And all that. But what does vacation mean for your diet and exercise? Vacation doesn’t have to mean doom for your healthy lifestyle.

There are a variety of reasons to continue to eat healthily while on vacation. For starters, when I am going on vacation, there is typically a beach involved. Which means there is also a bikini involved. And therefore, the exposing on my stomach is involved, and well, you get the picture. But, as I found out on my last vacation, for me it is also important to keep on track because it is surprisingly easy to get out of a good habit and into a really bad habit in a matter of days.

Last fall, my husband and I traveled to one of our favorite beach spots. It was a shorter trip than we usually take, and for that reason, I decided to just let myself go. Typically while on vacation, I am an excellent exerciser and a pretty healthy eater. I have worked out in gyms all over the world because I have always been afraid that a few too many days out of my routine would spell trouble. Unfortunately, my trip last September proved me right. I did not work out on any of the four days that we were on vacation. I made a few trips to the resort snack shop. And when I got back home? These bad habits continued. Four days away from the gym turned into three weeks without exercise. Three weeks away from the gym turned into bad eating habits. It literally took me months to get back on track with my diet and exercise. Those four days were a lot of fun, but they were not so fun that they made months of struggling worthwhile.

Right now, we are in the process of planning a late summer vacation. I am equal parts excited and worried. Excited for obvious reasons, but worried because I do not want to go through what I went through last fall with my eating habits and exercise routine. So what do I plan on doing to make things different this year?

For starters, get moving! For me, eating right and exercising go hand in hand. It has been said a million times before, but if you are working hard to keep yourself fit, you are far less likely to try and ruin that hard work with a food binge. Traveling somewhere that is walkable? Then walk! Save money on transportation expenses and be your own pedi-cab. I always try to stay in a hotel with a fitness center and make a point of getting up half an hour early to go for a jog. Working exercise into your vacation is a lot easier than you might think.

Second, decide when and where to splurge! Excited about trying out that new restaurant while on vacation? Enjoy yourself! Put poolside lunch? Eat a light salad or a healthy sandwich. Make your splurges worth it. You probably won’t remember that burger and fries, but that special seafood dish or a delicious steak at a romantic meal will be part of a more memorable experience.

Third, always remember to stay hydrated. All too often in life, not just on vacation, I confuse thirst with hunger. Every time I travel, I take Crystal Light On The Go packets with me in my purse and beach bag. I can only drink so much plain water, but I can drink tons of Crystal Light. It’s easy to carry and easy to use. Not to mention that flavored water is much more like a sweet treat than the plain stuff!

Lastly, remember this- and I do think this is how I am able to successfully manage my weight- every meal? Is not your last! You don’t have to eat every single bite of every single course of a meal! You will eat again and you will have a chance to have delicious food again. You have to decide if a moment of yummy overindulgence is worth whatever grief you may cause yourself later in the form of weight gain or guilt.

Bridezilla: Nothing Can Satisfy Her! Well, Maybe a $100 Visa Gift Card Can?

I was recently asked by BlogHer to do something I tend to do on my free time anyway- enjoy an episode of Bridezillas. If you’re anything like me, then you’ve been known to enjoy some bad behavior voyeur reality television. There’s nothing in the world that can make you feel more normal than well, watching people who are at a minimum certifiably not normal.

Such is the case with the Bridezillas. I have been pretty lucky in life to never have had an experience with a close personal friend of the Bridezilla nature. Each affianced friend I have ever had in my life has remained largely reasonable throughout the entire process. And when I got married, I was what I would call an Apathetibride. Basically, the exact opposite of a Bridezilla. While I was excited about my upcoming nuptials, I hardly cared enough about the affair to demand that my bridesmaids lose, or as I’ve personally seen on Bridezillas, actually gain weight. I did not have particularly specific tastes. My cares list included 2 items: delicious candy bar and a pretty dress. I got both with minimal effort, and without any Bridezilla behavior.

Upon watching an episode of Bridezillas, however, I sort of wish I could enjoy the special brand of insanity that apparently can only be produced by an enraged bride. Why, you ask? COMEDIC VALUE. The hilarity that one experiences from the incredible behavior exhibited by a Bridezilla for one would produce all kinds of blog material.

I personally have never known anyone to refuse to eat because they didn’t want to remove their elbow length gloves.

I’ve never known anyone to ask someone to move a funeral for their personal convenience.

I’ve never known anyone to declare themselves a “hooker” when discussing their bridal portraits.

I’ve never known anyone who has chosen to risk light bulbs exploding in my face for the sake of a tan.

I’ve never asked anyone to pay me to order them coffee. Or threatened anyone with “elimination” post wedding.

I’ve never known anyone to have a heated conversation about chicken cornucopias either.

And no one has ever offered me a plan B of “you all die” when discussing problem solving strategies.

In retrospect, I had the perfect opportunity to engage in some Bridezilla-ing of my own. My florist arrived two hours late. And my peony bouquet? MADE OF CARNATIONS. Thankfully, due to an adept planner who fashioned a bouquet from leftover centerpieces, this was only a temporary stressful situation. But according to Bridezillas, apparently I missed out on a lot of opportunities to yell profanities and exclaim repeatedly “BUT THIS IS MY DAY!” And more importantly, for everyone listening to be forced to just turn the other cheek at my display.

WHAT A WASTE!

Luckily for us, the “stars” of Bridezillas take those opportunities, and make them when they don’t exist. All for our enjoyment! Fantastic Shopping at LOFT and a Chance to Win a $200 Shopping Spree!

When I was asked by BlogHer to participate in the LOFT Shopping Party event, I was just a bit TOTALLY ECSTATIC. As a long time lover of LOFT, I cannot really think of a better way to “work” on a Saturday than spending some time shopping at one of my favorite stores. So what did BlogHer ask me to do? Pretty simple (and amazing), go to LOFT, work with a stylist, create three purposeful looks, and spend a $200 (!!) gift card!

When I arrived, I must admit that I was a tad apprehensive about the task at hand. While I do have full confidence in my ability to shop, which surprises none of you who read this blog regularly, working with a stylist made me a bit nervous. I know my style and what I think works for me, but having a stylist around, and being followed by a professional photographer? Felt a bit like being graded on my shopping!

I need not worry, as the stylist on hand was great, and well, he liked my ideas too! Nothing pleased me more than when I came out of my dressing room in a look that I had styled and the stylist exclaimed “Look at her- she doesn’t even need me!”

The great thing about shopping at LOFT is that the layout of the store makes it easy for anyone, even those who might feel stylistically challenged, to pick out a fantastic ensemble. Why is that? Well, for starters, the store is arranged in a most intuitive manner. Everything in similar color palettes and manner of dress are kept together in areas throughout the store. Workwear in one section, casual gear in another, the fantastic lounge collection in a grouping. . . it’s all pretty foolproof. And if that were not enough, there are outfits arranged throughout the store to give you great ideas on how to create new looks. Even though I feel confident in my ability to put together a look, I don’t always think of adding accessories like belts or scarves and having it all right there in one section really encourages creativity!

My other favorite thing about shopping at LOFT is how versatile everything is! The jacket I picked up for my office look will work great with jeans on the weekends. The cardigan I paired with the work dress with look fabulous paired with a party frock. The sweater I bought to wear with jeans will go great underneath a suit. All of the pieces really do work well together and are designed and arranged to encourage us as shoppers to rethink how we buy and how to repurpose pieces in ways that didn’t occur to us before.

One last thing before I get to the looks I created- LOFT did a fantastic job setting up this shopping party- brownie bites, Izze fizzy drinks, chocolate cookies and a super attentive staff (and not just to my fellow bloggers and myself- to everyone in store!)? Yes please!

On to the challenge!

My task was to create three looks: “Look Pretty At Every Party,” “Perfect Desk-To-Dinner Look,” and “Have A Perfectly Casual Holiday.” Here’s what we came up with!

First, for “Look Pretty at Every Party,” the stylist paired a chiffon trimmed knit dress ($69.50) with a gorgeous pinwheel detailed cardigan ($59.50) and a gray leopard scarf ($39.50) to create a wonderful look that can be dressed up or down with the right shoes and jewelry:

I love this color palette, and I love the versatility of this look. With heels and shimmery jewels? Perfect for a dressy event. With tights and flats? Great for a casual fete.

For “Desk-To-Dinner?” A beautiful, versatile cotton ruffle trim jacket ($89.50) paired with a gorgeous hued dress, the perfect shade for winter months. The dress was on sale (for $19.99!), and no longer available online, but try this dress for a similar look (which I saw on a fellow shopper and is completely adorable in person).

I’m proud to say I created this look, and then found that the stylist had created it for me as well. Great minds! Fans of my Outfit of the Day Blog know about my lust for jackets and this one has quickly moved to the top of my favorites list. My gift card was definitely used for this one!

The Best Jeans Advice Ever

Now, in order to get these photos into the blog, I had to shrink them, so this may be a bit difficult to detect. But my bottom looks way more like the bubble bottom I so loathe. In that top photo, I'm wearing a pair of ($170) Joe's Jeans. In the bottom photo, I'm wearing the ($69.50) Sexy Boot Cut.

What's the difference?

The seam. The seam on the Gap jeans falls down the center of my leg. The seam on the Joe's? Is definitely closer to the front of my leg. This creates an illusion of a larger bottom, a more bubbled effect.

The lesson here?

To minimize a bubble butt, look for a seam that is RIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE of your leg. That is the SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT factor if you are looking to minimize your rear. A lo! The Sexy Boot Cut does just that!

Max Factor 2000 Calorie Mascara and Vivid Impact Lip Color WITH GIVEAWAY!

When BlogHer asked me to review Max Factor’s newest mascara and lipstick, I was more than happy to oblige. I’m perpetually seeking the Mascara of My Dreams. My most recent purchase, by Yves San Laurent, was expensive but not quite fitting the bill. If you read my blog with any regularity, you surely know that I am more than willing to spend a small fortune on cosmetics. With that willingness comes something of a bias against drugstore brands. Most of the time, I find expensive cosmetics are worth the money. For that reason, I rarely purchase drugstore brands. So I am always excited to get a chance to try a drugstore cosmetic for free!

First, BlogHer asked me to review Max Factor 2000 Calorie Extreme Lash Plumper . When it comes to mascara, my purchase decisions are based primarily on the style of the wand. The Max Factor wand is unlike any other I’ve used. The wand has hard plastic bristles, and not the soft flexible fiber ones I am used to. One of the benefits of this style of wand is that the mascara is virtually clump free. It also makes application easy- mascara goes on in one long, clean stroke.

My other big mascara concern is flaking. Lately, I’ve been having issues with the mid-day mascara undereye circles. With this Max Factor formula, the problem did not go away entirely, but it was significantly reduced. The flaking was limited primarily to the area immediately underneath my lower lashes, whereas before the flaking and streaking was going on all around my eyes. And when I applied this formula to my lower lashes, there were no clumps. I often have issues with clumping on the lower lashes, as they are finer and shorter than my upper lashes. I was very impressed.

This mascara is primarily marketed as a thickening mascara. When I compared it to the Yves San Laurent formula I had been using, I definitely agree that it thickened my lashes. However, the YSL did outperform on lengthening. But if thin lashes is your issue, this is the perfect formula for you. Personally, I like to use two different mascaras to achive the effect of both thickening and lenghthening, and I would gladly add Max Factor 2000 Calorie Extreme Lash Plumper to my eyelash repertoire.

I was also asked to review Max Factor Vivid Impact Lip Color in “Pin Up Pink.” I have to admit, when I saw this lipstick in the tube, I was a little bit afraid. When it comes to lip color, I tend to stick to colors close to the natural color of my lips. In fact, I very rarely use lipstick at all. I’m a gloss girl. When I initially applied this lip color, I was a bit taken aback by the brightness. But after a few minutes of wearing it, I actually started to really like the color. But for those of you not interested in bright pinks, this product is available in twenty different shades.

As I stated previously, I prefer lip gloss. Why? I tend to shy away from matte colors. I don’t like the heavy application, the thick feeling of lipstick. This lip color definitely changed my opinion on that matter. It went on smooth, with a light feeling. I didn’t feel as though I had some heavy coating on my lips.

On the first day I tried this Max Factor product, I managed to put on my lip color before brushing my teeth. I was incredibly impressed with how well this product stayed on my lips, even through the tooth brushing. It actually lasted into the morning, which is something lip gloss never does. I would definitely purchase this product in another color in the future.

Overall, I was quite impressed with both of these Max Factor products, and I have to admit that perhaps my department store cosmetic preferences aren’t always the best choice. I would definitely purchase these products again, and have started using them regularly in my cosmetic routine.

What's In My Estee Lauder Shopping Cart?

When I was asked by BlogHer to review the new EsteeLauder.com site in exchange for some free cosmetics, obviously I jumped at the chance. I am the world’s biggest product junkie! There isn’t a line I have tried, or dreamt of trying. I am constantly refilling my cosmetics supply and perpetually experimenting with new products. So in essence, I am living the dream of getting paid to do what you love!

That being said, I’m always wary of buying cosmetics that I have not purchased before on the internet because you just don’t know what you are going to get! Will you be able to pick out the right colors? What is the texture? The consistency of the product? How big is the product? It always seems like quite a gamble, therefore, I’ve always been reluctant to part with my hard earned cash on something may potentially not be what I was wishing for. Obviously, then, I was quite grateful for the chance to try out online cosmetics buying on someone else’s tab.

So, I started by trying to get an overview of the site. On the What’s New page, you can take a guided tour of the new site which will explain to you some of the new features on the Estee Lauder page.

While admittedly, this is not something I would regularly do, it was actually a source of valuable information. As a result of reviewing this page, I decided to give the Skincare Finder a go. Skincare is my hobby, my love, my wallet’s blackhole! I feel that I know a lot about the subject, so this is the area where I felt I could most put the site to the test.

With just a few steps, the program developed an AM and PM routine for my face. I have to admit, I much preferred clicking on a few boxes to the usual 20 minute routine you deal with when encountering a sales associate at the beauty counters in the mall. The site tells you step by step what to use, and what specifically each product is targeted at. After using the skincare finder, I decided to purchase the Idealist Micro D Deep Thermal Refinisher. I am all about gentle exfoliation and I have high hopes for this product. When it arrives, I will definitely fill you all in!

I am presently in need of a new powder compact, as mine is just about to run out. After using the Foundation Finder, I decided to purchase Double Wear Stay In Place Makeup with SPF 10. Of course, as helpful as the Foundation Finder may be, it cannot tell me what color to purchase. As I said earlier, my biggest concern is purchasing makeup online is color matching issues.

The color samples on Estee Lauder do have a leg up on their competition. I really liked how the colors were shown with some texture:

Typically, sites have a flat color display that is not at all helpful. The texture added some extra depth and contrast, and consequently I feel fairly confident that when my Sand colored powder arrives, it will match my skin nicely. I also purchased the vibrating TurboLash Mascara, which I am beyond excited to try!

What are my other hesitations about ordering cosmetics online? Well, for one thing, I HATE to pay for shipping! Obviously, this is true of any purchase, but for cosmetics I seem to find it most offensive. However, just like at Sephora, ground shipping is free with any $50.00 purchase.

Another issue I have is free gifts! I am one of those people who tends to wait and wait and wait some more for a free gift. When I ordered my package, I was able to take advantage of a free gift offer with any $50 purchase. With code Holiday Hit List, I received a wonderful palette, mascara, perfume and a few other items. So free shipping and free makeup! Not bad. Gift wrap is also free on the site. There are several other special offers available on the site as well.

There were a few negatives- the site was very slow to load certain pages, and sometimes just got generally hung up and I had to refresh the page. We were also given gift codes to make our purchases, and there was a fair amount of trouble attempting to use them. However, I would imagine this problem was due more to the corporate gift codes and not the site generally. I also have yet to receive a shipping confirmation email. I did log in to my Estee Lauder account and was able to verify that my package had been shipped, complete with a tracking number. I do, however, like to get confirmation emails. This is just a little pet peeve of mine.

Overall, however, this was a better online beauty shopping experience than I was expecting. I think the Foundation and Skin Care Finders are some of the best I’ve tried online, and I do like the bonuses like free shipping and the availability of free gifts. And just as soon as my products arrive, you will get to hear all about them!

And I answer it, YOU OWE ME A THANK YOU. I love answering reader mail, but get some manners. This happens ALL THE TIME. I send a lengthy reply and get no response. That is just plain rude.

Um, missy..I ASKED you about my black raccoon eyes. in person and on my site. and you didn't answer.

I don’t really have all that much experience with undereye circles. I have some minimal shadowing, but nothing too extreme. In the past, I have used Cosmedicine Opti-mologist and basically rid me entirely of my dark circles. But, like I said. They weren’t that bad to start with. However, I am not the only proponent of this stuff. In fact, I got the idea from Amalah, who did an in store test on a friend and saw immediate results. Which is pretty damn impressive for an eye cream.

I’ve also used, and recommended (RECENTLY, MRS. MARTELL- read the sidebar!) Weleda Wild Rose Eye Cream.

I think the bottom line is that people with extreme dark circles are kind of expecting a lot. If you have chronic dark circles, I am guessing no product is really going to rid you of your problem. Which ultimately means, concealer is your best friend.

I have used both Chanel Pro Lumiere and the uber-famous Yves San Laurent Touche Eclat. Touche Eclat gets more press, but I prefer the Chanel. I think for oilier skin, it’s lighter formula is ideal. For drier, or older, skin, go with the YSL. Bobbi Brown Corrector is also an excellent choice.

Tied Up With a Black Velvet Band asks:

Do you have any suggestions for skin care products for uneven complexions? My face isn't breaking out anymore, but it seems that I have tons of redness in random areas...I would love to have an even complexion. I'm in the process of trying a few samples of different lines that I got from Sephora, but I'd love to hear any ideas you might have. Thanks!

I’m no dermatologist, but your redness is probably not a result of an “uneven complexion” per se. When I hear uneven complexion, I’m thinking of uneven skin tone- dark patches and the like. Skin redness sounds more like irritation from products or dryness, eczema, rosacea, or maybe even little bit of broken blood vessels. In other words, I don’t know that I want to touch your question because it is probably more appropriate for a real doctor and not some internet wannabe. It sounds like you know as much as I do- Sephora has a large collection of products for redness/rosacea.

For those of you with uneven skin tone, have you ever tried Clinique Even Better Skin Tone Corrector? I’m quite curious about the effectiveness of this product.

What do you think about the bright colors and patterns from a lot of mid-range lines this season (Ann Taylor, etc.)? I'm not feeling them and am a bit disappointed.

I’m a bright colors junkie. In fact, let’s take a little side trip into my closet:

You will note that it is arranged by color and season, and then there is a separate section for my dresses. Also take note of my favorite new shoes this season.

That being said, I went to the source of the problem. And I can see what you mean:

If you aren’t comfortable wearing brights, your first foray into them should certainly not be patterns, or heaven help us, OMBRE.

Personally, I kind of like the Pucci-esque nature of this top. But it’s not for everyone. If you want to dip the proverbial toe into brights, you guessed it- J.Crew knows best.

I’m guessing you won’t have much negative to say about a bright hued cashmere sweater.

Or these pumps.

I love the idea of a bright argyle sweater- old school pattern with fresh colors.

Or this fabulous purple mod dress.

I guess my point is this- if you don’t feel comfortable in bright patterns, or brights generally, stick to classic shapes. Or bright accessories. A black dress with bright purple shoes? A great look. A simple crewneck sweater with a chunky bold colored necklace? Why not? You don’t have to drop out of trends entirely because you aren’t ready to jump head first into them.

I don’t EVER buy anything full price. EVER. I’m always on the hunt at T. J. Maxx, Marshall’s, and Ross. I am the queen of the J.Crew sale. Old Navy has many, many undiscovered treasures.

I love Lulu’s. I’ve just started to get into Etsy. The sale section at Neiman Marcus is remarkable. Newport News has some surprisingly chic accessories and shoes.

In all honestly, I don’t think I have that many secret sites that no one knows about. I have just developed a sense of which products I love will go on sale and which will not. It is a skill I’ve spent many years developing.

There is one little secret I do have. If you are a girl who goes to Baylor, eventually you will meet a girl from Dallas and you will go on a shopping trip to her hometown. And inevitably, she will take you to Sam Moon. You will fight crowds and buckets of hideous accessories. But occasionally? You will stumble on something that makes it all worthwhile.

Do you think splurging on Wolford tights and stockings is worth it?

I’ve yet to do that, but I plan on it this winter. Everything I’ve ever read seems to imply they are worth the cost. Quite frankly, I’m tired of dropping $5 at Target every time I want to wear tights. I’d rather spend the money up front and get a season’s worth of wear out of a pair or two. If they last like people claim they do, they are entirely worth it. Even Ask Metafilter appears to endorse them.

Okay, so you all submitted A LOT of questions. It is going to take me a few entries to respond, but here is the first installment.

First things first- this question was asked by several people.

Have you tried Philosophy products? Thoughts on Purity Made Simple?

Oh, people. My thoughts on Philosophy products are complex and multi-faceted.

Okay, not really, but I have some fairly strong opinions on Philosophy. And they can be pretty well summed up thusly- I am about as interested/impressed with Philosophy as I am with Bare Escentuals, which is to say, not very impressed at all. (For the record, I have gotten several emails about mineral makeup- my answer is a big fat NO! to mineral makeup.)

I temporarily used Purity back during my early days of twenty-something acne. Of course, I used a lot of things then. And a lot of things that didn't work. And Purity was one of them. It didn't exacerbate any of my problems, but that isn't exactly a ringing endorsement. I think that if you have decent skin to start with, or that you are not really taking care of your skin in the first place, you are going to be impressed with Philosophy. Because it does get your face clean.

However it will not:

1. Clear up real, genuine article acne (i.e. something more than the occasional vanity blemish)

2. Improve excessive oiliness (like that suffered by yours truly)

In addition to Purity, I have also tried On A Clear Day, which is specifically designed for oily skin. It worked. Very temporarily. My skin developed a tolerance to this product in about a week. Which is not true of the Chantecaille face wash I currently prefer. I've been using it for months with much more successful results. Though, honestly, most of the time I just use good old fashioned $8 Cetaphil.

I am fairly impressed with the Microdelivery Peel. But the results are very temporary. I've neglected to mention this product on my blog before due to the cost, but the best damn peel out there?

Natura Bisse Glyco Extreme Peel. Yes, it costs as much as a used car. And yes ,it is worth every damn penny. You will simply not believe the immediate results of this product. Your skin will glow, your pores will be clearer and less visible. The texture will be vastly improved. Your skin will be softer than a baby's bum. It is just amazing.

Anyway, all of this to say- Philosophy? Eh. You will probably like it if you have generally agreeable skin. But if you have problem skin? You need something better, with a more specific focus.

I'm trying to find a good quality moisturizer for my normal/combination skin.

Okay, let me get one thing out of the way. Every magazine editor in the universe wants to throw a damn party for the Clinique yellow moisturizer, i.e Dramatically Different Moisturizer. WHY? You might as well put hand lotion on your face. In fact, I often carry the free samples of it in my purse to use as hand lotion. And it is not particularly well suited for that either, as it is so greasy I immediately regret using it at all. There is nothing dramatically different about it.

I'm going to combine my answer here with a question from Ariele about how make your dull skin appear less uh, dull. Specifically, Ariele asked about exfoliating products.

Okay, so the answer people? Is OXYGEN!

I'm a bit of a whore for Natura Bisse, but that is becaue their products are so effective. A lot of you commented and emailed in response to my blush post asking what I use to make my skin look like that. And the Natura Bisse line is the answer.

In the morning, after I wash my face, I use toner (I use the Sensitive toner by Natura Bisse, but I like this much cheaper one by Avalon Organics as well). I follow immediately with a moisturizer that contains SPF. For summer, I like to use a lighter formula. If you have oily skin, I'd say it is enough to simply use a creamy sunscreen, like Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch sunblock, or Chanel Rectifiance Intense Line Correcting Serum. For winter or for drier skin, I recommend Perricone Cosmeceuticals Solar Protection for Face or the more budget friendly Olay Total Effects SPF 15.

In the evenings, bring on the oxygen! And the cash because I don't have budget friendly editions of these items. Sorry. After my evening wash, I use Natura Bisse Oxygen Complex Intensive Purifying Serum, which I follow with Oxygen Cream. These products will work for any skin type, except possibly very dry.

Now let me tell you a little tale about Oxygen Cream. I found this product on my favorite beauty blog, Beauty Snob. CLICK ON THIS LINK. You see Tina Craig? She is 40. I want to look like her when I'm 40. You probably do too. Consequently, I will pretty much buy anything she says.

Anyway, so Tina wrote about the Glyco Peel. At that time there happened to be a rather generous Natura Bisse beauty offer, so I bit the bullet and bought it. And in the free gift, there were large samples of the entire oxygen line. I was told that the Oxygen Cream would actually draw out the things that were clogging my pores. I looked at the jar and said "BULLSHIT, OXYGEN CREAM." And then I watched over the next few days as the insanely persistent whiteheads that peppered my chin for years literally fell out of my face.

From that moment forward, I was a believer.

My initial experience with oxygen treatments was at the Bliss Spa. Back pre-wedding, I spent approximately $11,000,000 on facials trying to get my skin in order. The only thing that really seemed to have a positive effect was the oxygen spray treatment. I've also tried a sample of Bliss Triple Oxygen Face Mask and really liked it. I don't know how or why it really works, but oxygen definitely has a positive effect on my skin.

Ariele also asked about exfoliating treatments to deal with dullness. First, however, it must be said that drinking more water and having generally more well hydrated skin is the first step in having a less dull complexion. Obviously, a surface free of dead skin cells is going to help, but if your skin is dried out, it is not going to glow.

In terms of exfoliants, I am a fan of the old stand-by St. Ive's Apricot Scrub, though it can feel a bit abrasive. When I'm at my parents house, I always borrow my mom's L'Oreal Microdermabrasion Kit. The granules are small, and don't feel like they are scratching the surface. It definitely helps with pore issues. I also recently received a sample of Kate Somerville Exfoli-Kate in my NM Beauty Event tote and really liked it.

Ultimately, I would recommend exfoliating just a few times a week. You don't want to dry out or over exfoliate. It can make even the oiliest skin raw. I would also recommend using a glycolic acid peel for exfoliation. Nothing is going to do a better job at ridding you of those dead layers than glycolic acid in my opinion. The first product that really and truly worked for my acne riddled skin was a glycolic acid based cleanser by M.D. Forte.

Jess asks: How do you find a foundation to match your skin tone?

Ah, isn't this a pickle? I own a lot of makeup, and I still have trouble with foundation matching. I would say your best bet is to go with department store products because you can try before you buy. I must say, however, that in my experience,the sales associates at makeup counters ALWAYS try to get you to buy a shade that is too dark. So I usually push for a shade lighter than what they recommend. And have them put it on your face. YOUR WHOLE FACE. And walk around with it. Check it out in natural light. Do not feel forced into buying something just because you availed yourself of their services. It is their job to help you find a product you want to buy.

Additionally, bear in mind that if you have an oilier complexion, within minutes, your makeup is going to darken because of that oil. For that reason, I tend to purchase shades of makeup that look too light when initially applied.

The other best option is get thee to Sephora. They will prepare you samples in little pots that you can take home and try on for size for a couple of days. This will allow you to see how the foundation reacts with your skin and if you need to adjust the color lighter or darker.

I only buy my foundations at Neiman Marcus or Sephora because they have generous return policies. And trust me, if you are returning a product you don't like and are not an asshole about it, you are a heck of a lot nicer than 99% of their customers. People are SO RUDE to store employees. As long you are polite, they aren't going to get angry about a return. I say this because I know many of you are uncomfortable returning used products. It is okay, and they are used to it. It is their store policy and they should honor it.

With regards to drugstore products, it is just trickier. Things never look anything like those sample cards and it is near impossible to tell what something will look like on your face by how it looks in the bottle. It is something you kind of have to pick up over time. Personally, I'd rather shell out the extra dough for a department store product than have to buy the same item 10 times because the color I bought the first time didn't work. I know that Target generally accepts returns of used items, but I don't know about other stores. Targets also often have samples that you can test ON YOUR NECK OR WRIST (for the love of Christ, do not test them on your face) for a match.

Just the other day, as I was rushing to get to Mr. A's wine tasting/fancy dinner, I was on the phone with a friend. I told her I had to go, and she was all "OH, I'll let you go and get back to your fabulous life."

And I was all LADY, YOU CRAZY. Most of my time is in spent in laundry stand-offs. Or tending to my never ending tummy troubles. Or pondering things to buy online, of which I have nowhere to actually wear. In fact, lately, I have been feeling particularly un-fun and un-fabulous due to the never-ending routine in my day to day life: wake up, get ready, go to work, read the internet, go to the gym, go to sleep.

This lack of fabulosity (Yes, I watch Kimora: Life in the Fab Lane. WHAT OF IT?) is actually a big part of why I recently decided to become a morning gym person. Hopefully, a freer evening schedule would allow more time to be social during the evenings.

So I've sort of succeeded. Birthday dinners and fancy steaks and meeting up after work. I'm now available for that! Big change....So it was perfect timing on the part of the folks at B logHer and M&M’s to contact me about reviewing the new Premium M&M’s. The campaign is all about being fun and fabulous and LO! I AM NEWLY FUN AND FABULOUS PEOPLE! Serendipity at work!

And a few days after giving an enthusiastic yes! to free candy, I received a box containing 60 (!!!) packages of the assorted new flavors in the Premium line. Specifically, Chocolate Almond, Raspberry Almond, Mocha, Triple Chocolate, and Mint. Now I’m sure you’re all saying to yourself “But Slynnro! What of the recent attempts to curb your sweet intake!"

Like that would stop me from taking free candy.
More on that later.

But what to do with all of these M&M’s?

Even pre-going-off-the-sugar, I would have a hard time downing this many of any candy. After sampling all of the flavors…..uh, many times over, IN THE NAME OF RESEARCH, I formulated a plan. And I made dinner plans.

You see my lovely friend Ariele was making her triumphant return to Dallas the very same week I was contacted by BlogHer. So myself and three other friends got together for dinner to celebrate her homecoming. At a fun and fabulous restaurant, Sambuca. I decided that such a fun and fabulous event required party favors, and a perfect opportunity to share the wealth of chocolate with my pals. In addition, I decided to get to baking.

Well, sort of baking. If you know me at all, you will have already guessed that by baking, I mean that I bought a batch of prepared sugar cookie dough at the grocery store.

Now these Premium M&Ms are considerably larger than your average M&M- similar in size to the regular old peanut variety. So it wasn’t really an option to make my favorite cookie, the M&M sugar cookie. So instead, I decided to whip out the food processor and chop these babies up.

Hmmm... what is missing here?

Oh yes, that choppy thing.

After pulsing the M&Ms, I took the pre-made dough squares and rolled them in the resultant chocolate/nut mixture. I also recommend pressing some extra processed M&Ms on to the dough once they hit the pan, as the cookies spread when baking.

For these cookies, I went with both almond varieties because I thought they would be less likely to melt everywhere, and that the flavors would be most complimentary to the sugar cookie.

I WAS RIGHT. They also added a nice crunch to the cookie. I like my cookies a bit undone, so they tend to be a bit soggy. The M&Ms and almonds perked them right up!

With the rest of the dough, I made larger dough balls, and then pressed two of the Triple Chocolate M&Ms into the center of the dough. The Triple Chocolate flavor is a lot richer (in a good way) than your average plain chocolate M&M. Downright truffley in fact. The M&Ms melted together during the baking process, creating a gooey chocolate center.

On the night of the dinner, we had originally decided to meet at a wine bar. Unfortunately, when we pulled up, we discovered that it was closed. Ariele, mother to two very young children, was NOT happy.

“But I’m wearing gold shoes!” she cried. “WITH A HEEL. I NEVER WEAR HEELS AND I DON’T HAVE A DIAPER BAG. We must have the fun and have it right now!”

(Seriously. That happened. Our cars were parked next to each other and she actually held up the shoe, because her tale of woe is so much more compelling with a visual.)

And people, when presented with something like that, you find the fun and the fabulous pretty quickly.

So we moved on to Sambuca, and cocktails and conversation was had. Discussing old college friends and boyfriends and playing Remember That One Time When…. It was the very definition of fun and fabulous, and the whole dinner served as a reminder that making more effort to see the people in my life on a regular basis is something that pays dividends.

After dinner, I whipped out the cookies and M&Ms and we all tried the entire collection. I have to say, everyone was impressed. We all agreed that M&Ms really took it up a notch here. I love regular M&Ms, but these are bit more in the vein of Chocolates, and not just candy. Much more like a dessert, and less like a snack. Just really really good. The cookies were a hit too. And the next morning, Ariele called and told me that her kids loved them as well. So they certainly aren’t so fancy that a child can’t appreciate them. Kim, she who throws more wedding/baby showers than anyone I know, said that she would like to use them as favors for showers. The pink and blue of the almond flavors make them perfect for baby showers. When Mr. A and I got married, we had a candy bar for our guests. The Premium M&Ms would also be a perfect addition to something like that.

This week, I also had an evening with my friends Bryan and Matt and we watched the Olympics (by definition fun and fabulous).

Did you know that if someone simply says "Michael Phelps," you are required by law to do a cheer?

I decided to make mini-cheesecakes. Not shockingly, I just used a no-bake cheesecake mix.

If you use an appliance, it is automatically legitimate "cooking."

After pressing the graham cracker crust into the bottom of each dessert cup, I added a layer of chopped up M&Ms (for these, I used Mint and Triple Chocolate). I then added the cheesecake filling, and on top of that, another layer of chopped up M&Ms.

I don’t think I need to tell you how much these were enjoyed. And they took all of ten minutes to make.

Matt and Bryan's kitty collection- Let me show you it.

A brief description of the flavors:

Chocolate Almond- These are pretty close to Peanut M&Ms in taste. But the chocolate is better. More flavorful and the candy shell flavor isn’t particularly intense. I consider that to be a good thing.

Raspberry Almond- I don’t like fruit. I don’t like fruit flavors. Things shaped like fruit. Things that have possibly come into contact with fruit. But I actually kind of like these. The raspberry flavor is really just a hint of raspberry- not strong at all. These were a big hit with all the non-fruit haters.

Mocha- Really, really, really good. The ONLY thing I will drink at Starbucks is a Java Chip Frappucino. These were very reminiscent of that flavor.

Mint- These are my personal favorites. Great for after dinner- perfect mint to chocolate ratio. They would taste delicious chopped up over ice cream as well.

Triple Chocolate- A close second. These are certainly not your average plain M&M. Much deeper chocolate flavor. Especially good when cold. YUM.

Anyway, like I said earlier, this is sort of conflicting with my whole "trying to eat fewer sweets" thing. It's been a struggle. Fortunately, I love chocolate, but am able to control my consumption. It never ceases to amaze Mr. A that I can keep a candy bar in the refrigerator and take single bites from it. I enjoy a candy bar over a number of days. He is baffled (you probably are too). He is also highly irritated about the constant chocolate crumbs I leave in the fridge from my bites.

M&Ms are actually a perfect solution to this little problem. I like to keep a jar of them in the freezer because I like my chocolate cold. I can grab just a few and they will satisfy a sweet craving with ease. And lack of mess. I actually got this idea from my mother- she has long kept a mayonnaise jar full of Peanut M&Ms in her freezer. When I come home to visit, it is something I actually find kind of comforting to see (and no, M&Ms did not pay her to do that).

I did the whole free samples thing, ala Holly, and this was one of the items I received. I have INSANELY oily skin, and this does a fantastic job of soaking up the grease. My skin is noticeably less oily for 2 or 3 days following the use of this product. Also? It smells bad. Which to me is always the sign of a good product. Because if they just let it smell that bad, it has to have some redeeming value.

Packing How To, for those not interested in avoiding excess baggage fees.

So Aaron and I leave for the Turks and Caicos on Wednesday. I am SO FREAKING EXCITED about this trip, I cannot even stand it. I even got my toenails painted in a color that reflects how badly I am ready to go.*

Generally, when we go on vacation, it is an event that is booked six or so months in advance. Thus allowing me to ponder what I am going to pack for a very extended period of time. This trip, however, was planned a mere three weeks in advance. Call me crazy (and I know you will), but I find a mere three weeks to obsess over a vacation an incredibly insufficient period of time. I need to refresh Anthropologie.com 650 times! I need to debate my current swimsuit wardrobe for hours! I need to track down all of my J.Crew flip flops in a variety of colors! I need to draft several packing lists, based on previous packing lists for vacations to a similar climate!

Oh well.

You may think I speaking hyperbolically here, but you would be wrong. I really do all that stuff, and I was immediately stressed about packing when we booked the trip. This is because I am a serious over-packer. When I travel, I like to have options. I don’t pack an outfit per day. I don’t try to pick brown or black as my shoe color for suitcase efficiency. I’ve been known to pack a shoe suitcase, for a vacation lasting less than a week. I will bring a different handbag for every day. Five different swimsuit cover-ups. Yes, when I get home and unpack I lament about how I didn’t really need all of that stuff. But I’d rather that than get there and wish I had something I did not bring. And our last vacation added a new concern to the mix- packing the “oh shit delayed baggage” carry-on bag. Our baggage was delayed, and for about 12 hours, no one could find it. Eventually, we just drove up to the airport, walked through an unmanned customs station, and found it sitting unattended in a pile. But nothing takes the excitement out of just landing in paradise like realizing your entire wardrobe is missing and that you won’t be enjoying the beach in your new bikini, but instead the hotel provided bath robe (you should totally click on that one- it’s funny).

So, I’m going to show you how to pack if you just can’t say no. If looking good is more important to you than not having to lug three suitcases through the ridiculously complicated Miami airport. How to pack if you are insane!

Obviously, step one is make a list. Of course, you should make this list on your computer because you will want to edit it several hundred times. I also recommend a two-column format.

When making this list, start with the clothes you will wear for dinners out, which will logically allow you to add the appropriate shoes, jewelry and bags.

I do not allow myself to go in to accessories until the dinners-out wardrobe is finalized. Then add day clothes and swimwear and cover-ups. I always bring work out clothes because I am that jackass in the hotel gym.

When I pack my clothes, I use the roll up method:

When you are bringing as much shit as I do, space in the suitcase is a premium. This will absolutely save space, and it will keep your clothes perfectly wrinkle free. And if it doesn’t, well, that is why you brought your steamer with you, duh. To get the perfect roll for my dresses, I start at the bottom, because it is widest, and roll up. I also use this method for my tops and pajamas. However, I generally fold my shorts because they do not lend themselves to this method. I put those in the suitcase first and set the rolled items on top. Also, you may notice if you have a Pullman suitcase that your rolled items will fit nicely between the ridges created by the suitcase handle, further insuring wrinkle free travel. Also, you may notice that if you do not have a Pullman suitcase, you are a masochist.

On top of that, I add my hats. I have a fabulous sun hat and I usually bring a baseball cap. This is because Aaron thinks me + baseball cap = cutest thing ever. Who am I to argue with that really?

I wear the cap on the beach if I am in the water because it is less likely to fly off than the sun hat. The sun hat is great for sitting on the beach, and for the generally required snorkel boat trip we take. Plus, it makes you feel all glamorous and stuff.

Then comes the shoes:

I am a big fan of shoe bags. My mom bought me an adorable shoe bag for Christmas a few years ago. And this year, Aaron’s aunt adopted some animals from the World Wildlife Fund in our name. The certificates and souvenir stuffed animals came in these fantastic canvas bags that I have repurposed as shoe bags:

At this point, you may be questioning the logic of putting shoes on top of clothes. BUT! If you put your rolled clothes on top of the shoes, they fly around in your suit case and come unrolled. With the shoes on top, they do not, and the weight of the shoes doesn’t seem to put a dent in the clothes. And the shoe bags protect the clothes from anything that might be on the shoes.

This is where all the planning starts to go downhill…

I shove all the undergarments, socks, and swimwear into the top mesh pocket, as wrinkles aren’t a concern there. Inevitably, before the zip-up of the suitcase, I end shoving a few absolutely unnecessary items because hey! There’s room! Why not?

Briefly, on swimsuits:

Both of the blue print suits are made by Shoshanna. The brown is made by La Blanca. The Shoshanna suits are absolutely amazing. If you are bigger than a B cup, you should absolutely try them out. If you have a larger top, and smaller bottom, you need to be buying swimsuits in separates. Shoshanna tops are made in cup sizes, up to Double D, and they come in petite and regular sizes. And the halter top? Is your friend, ladies. And I’m just throwing this out there because it needs to be said:

IF YOU ARE BIGGER THAN A B CUP, NO BANDEAU TOPS OF ANY KIND.

I KNOW I KNOW! Fat reducing creams? Slynnro, seriously?

Hear me out!

I know I am not a fat girl, and no cream is going to make a fat girl slim. However, this cream makes a puffy water retaining girl less puffy and water retaining. It also temporarily reduces cellulite, which I certainly do have. Same goes for the Love Handler. I use FGS on my thighs, and I am telling you that there is a noticeable difference in size. I think it flushes out all of the water and whatever else makes you feel puffy. In like, seconds. The Love Handler does this for abs. I’m telling you- I would not admit to owning these products unless I honestly thought they helped.

I am also a sunscreen maniac, and I use the Kiehl’s Vital Sun Protection for my face and body- it is great protection and doesn’t cause break outs. I always shower before going to the beach, and I use the Crème de Corps as a base moisturizer for my skin. It has SPF in it, and the more SPF layers you’ve got on, the better. I also use a regular moisturizer with SPF every day. Now, here is where I get controversial- my mother once told me that the best sunscreen you can wear is makeup. And I agree. I have never once gotten a sunburn while wearing foundation. Of course, I do not want to wear a thick layer of foundation to the beach. This is where Clinique Almost Makeup SPF 15 comes in. I also put on a layer of this on top of my sunscreen. I think the opaque nature of makeup provides an extra layer of protection. Plus, your skin looks better in beach pictures! It’s lightweight and doesn’t look like you are wearing foundation, waterproof, and does not cause break outs. I heart this stuff!

I also bring my favorite vacation perfume- Comptor Sud Pacifique in Vanille Amande. It smells heavenly, and I have had the bottle for over 2 years, and it is still kicking. Everyone told me to wear a special fragrance on my wedding day, and this is what I chose. I recommend that to anyone (Jess) who might be getting married. One spritz, and I am taken back to our honeymoon, specifically, this huge bathroom and getting ready for a nice dinner.

I also have a travel jewelry box that I take with me. It’s kind of small, which is good, since it forces me not to take everything in my ridiculously messy regular jewelry box:

And lastly, snackies! Aaron and I love to have Goldfish and Twizzlers for the beach! And it’s way cheaper than buying $20 cookies at the hotel store.

The new, most complicated element of my packing is now my carryon, as I am going to pack enough in it to last me one luggageless day. I recently got this $98 LeSportSac duffle on sale for $20, obviously at Bloomingdale’s:

It’s the perfect overnight size bag. In it I will put 1 swimsuit, 1 coverup, 1 pair flip flops, small sample sizes of facewash, medications, toothbrush, makeup (which I keep in this bag that was a hasty purchase at Heathrow- anyone going to London? I’d like another. I’ll reimburse you!). Is there anything else you’d be taking? This bag is way stressing me out. Even though I’ll probably not need it, as the surest way to prevent a travel disaster is to freaking plan for it.

And another question- reading recommendations? I’m the world’s worst book picker outer. I usually let Aaron do it, but he has been lazy and I am still bookless. What is a great beach read? Bear in mind, I do not do books about people with shopping addictions, or novels about women who are getting married or single and looking for love. Help a girl out.

Alrighty, people. So I'm about to bring you the Leg Routine. Now, before that happens, a few caveats. For me personally, I will swear on a stack of J. Crew catalogs- I see results in a matter of days with this routine. HOWEVER, I already have muscles in my legs and they are fairly thin to begin with. If you do not already exercise, you are probably not going to see any changes that quickly. I do feel quite confident that even if you are presently a total couch potato, if you do these exercises regularly (i.e. daily) you will see results. And you will feel sore the day after you do them.

To me, in terms of muscle toning, the 1980s are where it is AT! If you are a typical female, you are probably not trying to develop large leg muscles. You are trying to develop long thin muscles that make your legs appear shapely, and not masculine. While using the lower body weights at the gym to achieve these goals is possible, I think for what the average woman is really looking for, toning exercises will work just as well, if not better, than weights.

My mother was always a big fan of home aerobics videos, so long, long ago when I decided to start exercising my senior year of high school, these are the kinds of videos I did. My favorites were by Joannie Greggains, but you can't get those on DVD. Incidentally, if you are in possession of a copy of Firm Fannies, I will pay top dollar.

I bought this last year, did it once, nearly died, and didn't pick it up again until fairly recently. And dude, this video? KICKS YOUR ASS. It is also an excellent ab workout because you spend a fair amount of time laughing hysterically. To wit:

I have nothing to say about this one. Nothing at all.

This video is divided into 4 components: Legs of Steel- cardio and toning, and Hips and Thighs of Steel- cardio and toning. I've done the cardio and it is surprisingly difficult and tiring. You have to put up with a LOT of ridiculous commentary, but if you are not already doing some form of cardio, it will definitely get you going. I just do the toning exercises because I do enough damn cardio thanks. The toning portion is about 12 minutes, so it's reasonable to do in addition to running or walking.

I also recently bought Total Body Challenge: Pilates (available at Target). Initially when I did the tape, I was not impressed. It felt way too easy. Until the next day when I tried to fucking walk and my legs were so sore I had trouble getting out of bed. While I am all for exercise that doesn't seem as hard as it really is, it is somewhat frustrating to spend time working out and not feel like you are accomplishing anything during the act. I like to feel tired and sweaty after a workout. This video doesn't really give you that satisfying feeling. So far, I have only done the lower body workout, but there is also an upper body and abs toning section of the video. Each portion is around 15 minutes.

Downsides include stinky plastic ribbon and irritatingly picturesque background for the Pilates video girls. Also, unless you, ya know, have a big fan blowing on you while you work out, that damn ribbon hangs in your face:

And now, on with the real show.

This is a selection of what I felt were the Best of the Best exercises from the 1980s videos I used to do. I do not do this regularly, and every time I decide to pick up again I ask myself why. It is absolutely critical that you perform the exercises slowly and not in a jerky manner. It's not just about the action of moving your legs around. It is about slowly contracting the muscles.

For the first exercise, you start on your side with your arm propping up your head:

Bottom leg bent, top leg straight out. Lift and lower:

For 25 reps.

Next, bend both legs at a 90 degree angle, stacked on top of each other. Lift and lower:

For 25 reps.

The last exercise in this position is a bit difficult to describe. Start with your knees like this:

you will then need to rotate your leg so that your feet touch:

The motion needs to be exaggerated. You don't just flip flop back and forth. You have to bring your leg up high and then down with your feet touching. It's not just a knocking motion. This will work the inner thighs, which is the bane of many women's existence. It needs to hurt. If it doesn't, you are doing it wrong.

Now roll over on to your hands and knees. For the first exercise, you will bring your knee in, and then extend it out:

For 25 reps.

Then take your leg from that extended position and lift and lower, for another 25 reps. No pictures because ENOUGH PICTURES OF MY ASS ALREADY.

For the final exercise from this position, bend your knee as in the first picture from this set and then lift and lower, keeping your knee bent the entire time.

Lastly, you will need to lack on your back, with your knees bent and your legs apart (like you are going to maybe give birth). Then you will do a series of squeezes of your butt muscles. Yes. I know. It's ridiculous. But it works. First you will do 25 reps with your feet flat on the floor. Then 25 with your toes raised. Then 25 with your heels raised. Then bring your legs together and repeat the process. You need to squeeze hard! Also,. hold the squeeze, aka an isometric hold, for 25 seconds between sets.

So, that's it! My magical thighs routine. I'm terribly afraid none of you will be impressed, but give it a try. If at the end your muscles aren't shaking, you are probably doing it wrong. It is hard for me, and my legs are quite tired at the end. Good luck!

What's In My Shower

Today, we have the second installment of “What’s in my……” Originally, I was thinking of doing my bathroom, all in one post. Until I looked under the sink and realized that I don’t particularly care to write, nor do you particularly care to read, a seven page post. Because, honestly, that is what it would take to adequately describe the contents of my entire bathroom. So instead, this post will cover

What’s in my shower?

My shower is perpetually organized. I’m a bit nuts about it really. I’m rearranging by size and shape and area of application (to my body).

First we have the famous Shower Kitty:

I bought Shower Kitty the summer before my junior year of college, which means at this point, he has been with me for nearly 8 years. He was purchased at T.J. Maxx and in keeping with my love of animal related objects, I consider him to be a prized possession.

In Shower Kitty, I keep the majority of my face products, a variety of free samples of body scrubs, my razor, and deep conditioner.

Currently, I have three different face washes in rotation (and these products were acquired over months, I did NOT buy them all at once): Chantecaille Rice and Geranium Foaming Cleanser, Bliss Fabulous Foaming Face Wash , and Natura Bisse Facial Cleansing Gel with AHA. I have incredibly oily skin (thanks mom!) so I am constantly trying to find a face wash that helps deal with this issue. I have found various products in the past that I have liked, but that I also ultimately developed a tolerance to. Thus, I am cycling the best face washes I have found with the hope of preventing the eventual immunity development. Honestly, the best of the bunch is (not shockingly) the most expensive- the Chantecaille. The tube is quite small, but you need such a small amount to wash that the tube lasts over 3 or 4 months.

The Bliss stuff is excellent because it has tiny exfoliating beads, but it doesn’t quite do the job on controlling oil. It would be great if you don’t have excessively oily skin. The Natura Bisse is new, but I have loved everything I have tried from that line (more on that later).

I have a large variety of hotel and Sephora samples in a rotation here as well. I like to use body scrubs from time to time, but I don’t like to pay for them for some reason. For a while, Sephora was giving away Caudalie Gommage Sauvignon Scrub and Bliss Lemon Sage Body Scrub. Both are adequate, but not nearly as good as body salts, which provide much better exfoliationg. But also cost money, so whatever. I also have St. Ive’s Apricot Scrub, the mother of all facial scrubs. I use this on my shoulders and arms as well as my face (and occasionally with the Neutrogena Power Wave, technique described here). There is also a large skin brush there- I had a pecan body scrub when we stayed at the Four Seasons for our anniversary and the brush was included. I use that with the exfoliants as well.

For a razor, I prefer the Venus Vibrance. It vibrates just a little, and in my opinion provides a much smoother shave. I don’t use shave gel or cream- just a moisturizing body wash with a shower puff.

I also use Neutrogena Triple Moisture Deep Recovery Hair Mask. I use this fairly rarely, as I have hair that is healthy to a fault. As in, I wish it was somewhat drier because it is incapable of holding a style. I do this monthly or so. It doesn’t weigh my hair down nearly as much as other deep conditioners I have used in the past.

The shelves in my shower are divided into categories: hair, body, face.

I take two showers every day, and I wash my hair both times, against the advice of well, everyone in the universe. Sorry, but I have to take a shower in the morning, and I work out in the evening and there is no way in hell I am not going to wash my hair after that. But since no one is seeing my hair between the hours of 10 p.m. and 7 a.m., I use cheaper shampoos that are conditioning because I’m not worried about volume (my hair is extremely flat and fine).

For night shampoo, I am currently using Bed Head Brunette Goddess Shampoo (which I paid like $10 for at Albertson's) and Organix Vanilla Silk shampoo. Honestly, I bought the Organix because there was rebate and it was free. But it smells delicious and leaves my hair incredibly soft. The Bed Head stuff also smells incredible- like cookies and makes my hair very shiny. Neither are great if you have hair volume issues, but they would be great if you have thick, tangle prone hair.

For days, I LOVE LOVE Fresh Soda Shampoo. I have searched for years for a volumizing shampoo that actually made my hair both manageable and downright fluffy. This stuff does it. I know the price is high for shampoo, but the bottle lasts a good 4 or 5 months, and it is just worth every penny to me. It’s also a great clarifying shampoo.

I bought Burt’s Bees Pomegranate and Soy on Amalah’s recommendation. While it does help volumize and deep clean, it leaves my hair a tangled mess. My hair is impossible to comb after using this product. Nonetheless, if you are looking for a good volumizing shampoo, this is the best affordable product I’ve tried (and I’ve tried them all).

For conditioners, I alternate between John Frieda Brilliant Brunette Light Reflecting Conditioner and Alba Botanica Volume conditioner (available at Target and Whole Foods, and I do not have color treated hair). I love both of them, and both smell incredible. I really do feel that the Brilliant Brunette enhanced my hair color, but the Alba product is slightly less heavy.

On the next row, I have my body washes. I go into a panic if I have fewer than four shower gels. Seriously. I don’t know what my problem is, but I have to have a variety of choices for some unknown reason. I love Philosophy body washes (currently using Strawberry Milkshake). I also have Bath and Body Works. I use the Aveeno Skin Relieving wash when I am having skin itch issues, which is unfortunately often. I have incredibly sensitive skin. In the realm of more affordable options, I have Boot’s (from Target) Amazon Forest Brazil Nut and Vanilla body wash. I also like Burt’s Bees Milk and Shea Butter wash, which I bought because it smells like the beach. All are super moisturizing and can be used to when shaving.

I also have a free sample of Kiehl’s Crème de Corps Soy Milk and Honey Body Polish. When I run out of my free body scrub samples (some time during 2012), I will be buying this. This stuff is excellent- exfoliating and smoothing without being drying. And it smells amazing. I love all things Kiehl’s, and this is no exception.

On the bottom shelf, I have a bit of a mixed bag. First, the Burt’s Bees Peach and Willowbrook Deep Pore Scrub. This stuff totally sucks. It’s not grainy enough to do a good job exfoliating and it is quite difficult to wash off. Second, Cetaphil. I use this at night when I am less concerned about quashing oil production. It also does a great job of removing makeup. I do not use eye makeup remover. I use the baby oil to shave more intimate areas. It prevents razor burn. I also have a bottle of N.V. Perricone Citrus Face Wash. This was my go to face wash for a while, but I have found that when you get to the bottom of the bottle, this stuff just reeks. Like, it is rendered unusable because of the stench. And it doesn’t last nearly long enough to justify the cost.

I know you're wondering.....how do you get all these samples? Sephora gives shit away. They are BEGGING you to take their samples. Join the Beauty Insiders, or just go in the store and ask. They are more than generous, and it is nothing to be embarrassed of. Neiman Marcus is also constantly giving things away. The best time to buy is during the Beauty Event. With a minimum purchase, you get a tote bag full of very large (sometimes lasting months) samples. Of very high end products. You can also just stroll up to the counter. I got individual pots of this stuff just last week. I was able to get 2 month's worth of samples of the very pricey Natura Bisse oxygen line during a Beauty Offer period. So there you have it, product wonderland! Aaron and I no longer share a bathroom, and to him it is a special treat to use my shower and have access to all this stuff. Trust me, if you live with a man, he is secretly in your beauty shit. All the time. Rejoice in that because you've seen his pores. Since I’m sure all 13 readers of this blog are planning on sending me Christmas gifts, I thought I’d share what I’m wanting for Christmas. Yes, much of this falls in the fantasy category, but ya know, a girl can dream.

Samsonite Black Label Fashionaire Pullman- Oh how I want this! My true dream is to have a collection of Louis Vuitton luggage. At these prices, this luggage isn’t much less of a fantasy than the LV set. BUT! My mother actually owns the ultra-cool vintage Fashionaire (a high school graduation gift in 1973). And since my sister is an irresponsible mess, I am going to inherit it. After years of reading in fashion magazines about some bitches inheriting their mom’s Chanel jacket collection and lamenting my doom to inherit a collection of HSN jewelry, this is fucking awesome. Bonus- It’s actually worth a significant amount of money. But ya know, I’m not going to be getting it until I’m old (god-willing) and my mom doesn’t have the Pullman . Pictured above is the beauty case, which my mom does own.

J.Crew Gramercy Coat in Bright Alpine- I’ve long wanted a green coat, which is somewhat inexplicable because green isn’t terrifically practical, and $350.00, a coat should probably be practical. But HOT PINK SATIN LINING! Looking at it makes me want to eat Jolly Ranchers.

J.Crew Picnic Critter Charm Bracelet- This is pretty much the cutest thing ever, and actually the kind of thing my animal loving husband might be inclined to buy. But I’ve already begged for this, so two expensive pieces of jewelry are pretty unlikely. I also desperately want these bangles.

Valentino Histoire Bag- How angry am I that Zahara Jolie has one of these? Seriously. She’s two.

Scanty Penguin Pajamas- I already have a pair of Scanty boxers and let me tell you- don’t buy a pair of these unless you are prone to feeling like you are having a good ass day because they leave NOTHING to the imagination.

Christian Louboutin Turbillon Rolf Satin Slingbacks- and a dress to wear them with, and a place to wear both, for I have no life. And for my more practical side, these Louboutin knotted pumps that I have been lusting after for 6 months.

Honey Bear Shakers from Anthropologie- Methinks no explanation is necessary.

Anthropologie Astrid Chair- It’s a shame that now that I have access to money to decorate properly, I live with King Brown Leather because Lord, I have decorating ideas.

Anthropologie Soft Pour Sweater Dress- I’m all about the dress. The warm cuddly dress. And in that vein, the J.Crew Dream Sweater Dress. Also, this.

And lastly, a place to rest after all the holiday hullabaloo- The Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa. Seven nights should do.

And now, onto the stuff I’m eating.

As previously mentioned, I am trying to go as gluten free as possible. I don’t believe I have a severe wheat allergy. However, since this dietary change, I feel better, so something’s gotta be up. So I do it mostly during the week, and then notsomuch worry about wheat-free on the weekends. My new favorite products!

Bell and Evans Garlic Parmesan Chicken- YUM YUM YUM. These are way better than the fatty stuff you can get from Tyson or whomever. I get them at Whole Foods. BTW, I have totally become one of those “only shops at Whole Foods/Central Market” people. I could give a crap about being organic or whatever, but the food tastes so much better. Anyway, these are not gluten free, but they do make tenders that are, and they are just as delicious. Do take note that if you buy them, they are not cooked, which is different than most tenders which are heat and eat. Don’t make the mistake I did and end up biting into raw chicken and nearly puking on your desk.

I eat my Bell and Evans with Alexia oven fries, which I’ve discussed before. Pleasantly gluten free.

EnviroKidz Amazon Frosted Flakes and Peanut Butter Panda Puffs- Both of these are cereals I would eat gluten free or no. And I love me some cereal. Plus, they donate a portion of their profits to rain forest related charities. I do not recommend the EnviroKidz Organic Crispy Rice Bars. Meh at best. And the animal cookies are downright gross. Avoid!

Think Products Think Thin Bars- The Creamy Peanut Butter is just like a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, only in bar form. Absolutely delicious. The White Chocolate Chip is also amazing. Most of the other flavors I have tried are too bitter. Surprisingly, you can get them at Wal-Mart, but there is a larger flavor selection at Whole Foods.

ClifKid Organic Z Bars- I think Clif bars are completely disgusting, gross, nasty, horrible. So why I picked up a box of these is a mystery to me. Regardless, I’m glad I did because they are really good. I prefer the peanut butter flavor, but the others are also pretty tasty. They are also a lot more filling than the delicious, but unsatisfying, Quaker Chewy bars. The label doesn’t specifically say gluten free, but they are made with rice flour and the label says the ingredients do not use wheat, whatever that means.

Amy’s Kitchen Baked Ziti Bowl- This is gluten free and made with soy cheese. Sounds like a recipe for gross, eh? I thought so too, but I was so wrong. It also contains peas, which sounds off, but they add just enough sweetness. This is officially my new favorite microwave dinner. It is really just so incredibly good. My issue with tomato sauce in these dinners is usually that it is really chunky and nasty. Not the case here- no grody tomato chunks. Excellent.

I am also enjoying Amy’s Stuffed Pasta Shells. Sometimes, there will be a spot that is too spinachy for me, but overall really good. And filling. Not gluten free.

Campbell’s Tomato Soup- When I was afraid I was Celiac, I was quite distressed to learn that this soup contains gluten. This soup is just about my favorite food, and people, I take that whole Possibilities thing quite seriously. Mix it up! My favorite soup add-ins: Annie’s Sour Cream and Onion bunnies, a little bit of sour cream for thickness, of course goldfish, crushed up Guiltless Gourmet chips, tortellini and ravioli (I prefer Buitoni ), any kind of cracker. I could go on and on.

Applegate Farms Chicken and Apple Breakfast Sausage - Microwaves in less than a minute, and so good on an english muffin. Spelt muffin of course.

Whole Foods 365 BBQ and Cheddar flavors Soy Crispettes - I typically hate those snack rice cakes/crackers because they are typically bland and soggy, but these contain enough flavor and are very crispy. Delicious. And gluten free.

Prescription Skin Care and N.V. Perricone

About two months ago, after nearly a year of skin bliss, things started getting funky on my face yet again. After having various OTC treatments fail me, I went back to the dermatologist. Yet again, I was put on antibiotics- hormonal acne was my diagnosis. He also suggested taking Yaz for birth control, but I've know of three people getting pregnant on that, so I decided to stick with my Ortho Tri-Cyclen. The doctor also prescribed Benza-Clin, which produced a rather miserable rash on my face. Consequently, I was given Clindagel for spot treatment, which has been amazing. Any potential blemishes are gone overnight. The lesson here? Don't fuck around with your skin- get thee to a dermatologist.

That said, even when my skin wasn't a big ol' zitty mess, it was hardly enviable. I have approximately 97 different skin tones on my face, and freckles, and patches and little bumps and texture issues. Not the skin of anyone's dreams. So I decided to go all out in my attempt to fix my face. Of course, this meant dropping some serious cash at Neiman Marcus.

In the past, I have received various samples of N.V. Perricone, M.D. products and loved all of them, with one exception. I have also been using Solar Protection for Face for nearly a year (and in that time, I have purchased only two tubes, one of which is still nearly full- pricey, but lasts FOREVER). I finally decided to break down and purchase the Advanced Face Firming Activator because it was Beauty Event time at Neiman's, which meant tons of samples, including Perricone samples. I have been using the Citrus Facial Wash, the Activator, and Solar Protection for Face during the day, and the wash and a sample of the Concentrated Restorative Cream and the Face Finishing Moisturizer in the evenings.

The verdict after one month of use? AMAZING. My skin texture is a thousand times improved. Skin clarity and tone? SO MUCH BETTER! I feel much more comfortable without makeup, I don't worry about my makeup wearing off during the day. My skin feels firmer and more supple and moisturized and the dark spots are fading. My freckles are less noticeable. The spots that appeared during my sun soaked vacation (which was prior to the start of using these products) are gone. In the morning, I no longer wake up to a pool of oil on my face. I love this stuff!! And the packages last forever. I have yet to buy the Restorative Cream, but the small sample has lasted nearly a month, and I estimate it will last at least six weeks. The wash, activator, and moisturizer will probably last 8-10 months.

I know these products are expensive, and it seems that with Dr. Perricone, people either love him or hate him. Unfortunately for me, I love him. I say unfortunate because, ya know, why can't I love Neutrogena skin care and save myself a few hundred bucks? Well, I can't. And I just feel fortunate to have found something that seems to be working. Regardless, before you try any oif these products, go to Neiman's or Sephora- they are quite generous with the sampes. For me, the results were almost immediate, so if you don't see a change with the samples, it may not be for you.

In other yuppie news, I am activating the "blog it till you make it" trip mojo, and blogging about a trip that I proposed to Aaron last night. He is, at least temporarily, agreeable to this trip. So hopefully, in January, I will be here or here. Blog, don't fail me now!

Also, last night after a week of unbelievable bloating and agony, I had a small crying break down about the condition of my tummy. After six months of an incompetent gastroenterologist, my troubles are still not over. In fact, they are worse than ever. And last night, I just couldn't take it anymore. I've been unable to fit into any of my clothes all week, and unable to enjoy pretty much anything for considerably longer. I spend a lot of time joking around about looking pregnant and whatnot, but the truth is, I am quite miserable. And I'm afraid no one is ever going to fix me. I have an appointment with a new doctor on Monday, and I am really hoping for a positive change. Last night, during my crying fit, I did some more internet research on treatments for my problem. I even concocted a plan to take a few of these and then eat a greasy pizza, because that is supposed to cause loose stools. Welcome to my sad, sad life.
